Prohodna cave

Prohodna is one of the most famous caves in Bulgaria, located just 0.5 km from the village of Karlukovo. It is an emblem of the Karlukovo karst region. This geological phenomenon lies at 250 meters above sea level. The cave is easily accessible and walkable throughout all seasons. A road passes directly above it, connecting Karlukovo to Karlukovo Station, the National Cave House "Petar Tranteev", and the infrastructure of Bulgaria’s first geopark – Iskar–Panega, as well as the town of Lukovit. There is a fully renovated road from the village of Rumyantsevo, as well as from nearby villages like Petrevene and Belentsi.

"Blue ostriches" Farm

The “Blue Ostriches” Farm was founded in 2001 in the village of Brestnitsa, Yablanitsa municipality. It is located near Saeva Dupka Cave, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country. The farm raises rare and exotic animals such as ostriches, deer, and decorative rabbits. Visitors can get up close with these animals and learn about ostrich farming – including their lifestyle and the products derived from them, such as feathers, eggs, leather, meat, and more. The small on-site "Ostrich Museum" displays a variety of items and souvenirs made from ostrich materials.

Iskar-Panega Geopark

Iskar–Panega Geopark is located just an hour from Sofia, near the entrance to the town of Lukovit. The park follows the Zlatna Panega River, with scenic wooden bridges, gazebos, and platforms enhancing the walking experience. The geopark includes two main areas: the Karlukovo Karst Complex and the Panega Landscape Park. This is Bulgaria’s first official geopark, home to many sites of geological, geomorphological, and paleontological interest. One of its goals is to promote the country’s geotourism potential. The main trail runs along the Zlatna Panega River, which originates from Glava Panega, one of the largest karst springs in Bulgaria, located about 19 km south of Lukovit.

Rock Monastery

"St. Nicholas - Gligora"

Located about 5–6 km from Karlukovo village, this monastery is built into a natural niche in the vertical cliffs of the scenic Iskar Gorge.

To reach it, you must climb approximately 100 steps. Inside, you’ll find beautiful frescoes and an altar. Adjoining the church are a residential area to the south and a utility building to the north. Both are two stories tall, built on a natural rock shelf. The area in front of the altar served as a crypt, where monks kept the bones of their deceased brethren.

Rock Monastery
"St. Marina"

The St. Marina Rock Monastery is located near Prohodna Cave, accessible via a trail from the National Cave House and Tourist Center. Though short, the path is steep and, despite some safety features, remains challenging in parts. Signs mark the route. The monastery consists of a small rock church and courtyard. Visitors can light candles inside. Built in the 14th century, this rock church is considered a unique monument of Bulgarian medieval history and was once inhabited by hesychast monks.

Rock Formation
"Provertenika"

The Provertenika Rock Formation lies on the left bank of the Iskar River, in the stunning Iskar Gorge near the village of Karlukovo. To reach it, take the road past the hospital and follow the gravel path toward the St. George the Miracle Worker Rock Monastery. This road leads to the base of the formation, but the best view is from Provertenika Hut or the surrounding heights.

Provertenika is a vertical rock with a circular hole at the top and several stone towers around it. It is believed to have been an ancient observatory, as during the solstices, the sun’s rays pass precisely through the opening.
